Hong Kong International Airport is the major air travel hub in Hong Kong, which is situated at the Chek Lap Kok island, which was an island reclaimed specially for the airport construction. The airport is also colloquially called as Chek Lap Kok Airport to distinguish it from the predecessor airport, named Kai Tak Airport.

The airport is having commercial operations from 1998 onwards by replacing the previous Kai Tak Airport and it is also the primary trans-shipment center and gateway for many destinations in the Mainland China and rest of Asia. As of now, Hong Kong Airport is the busiest cargo gateway of this region and also one among the busiest passenger airports in the world.

Hong Kong International Airport also consists of one of the largest passenger terminal building among the global airports. Hong Kong International Airport is the busiest airports in Asia, which is operated by Airports Authority Hong Kong. The airport also serves as the primary operational hub for Cathay Pacific, which is the flagship carrier of Hong Kong and also for Dragonair, Hong Kong Express Airways, Hong Kong Airlines, and Air Hong Kong cargo carrier.

Major air traffic hub

The airport also serves as one of the regional hubs of the Oneworld alliance and is also the Asian-Pacific cargo hubs for UPS Airlines. Hong Kong is also the focus city of many leading airliners including China Airlines from Taiwan, China Eastern Airlines. Ethiopian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, and Air India now uses Hong Kong as a stopover point for long-hauling routes.
